Newbies” Make It Interesting in Women’s Doubles

Newcomers Make their Mark, but Lindenwood Retains Title

Seeded 2nd overall, the pairing of Karin Fukushima and Leina Agata from Lindenwood defeated Sara Hazinski/Ines Perhoc of Texas Wesleyan, giving Lindenwood their second women’s doubles title in as many years. For Fukishima and Hazinski, it was different partners but the same result as in 2010. Fukishima teamed with Livia Mizobuchi to capture the 2010 title over TWU’s Hazinski and Tina Chen.

On the path to the finals for both the Lindenwood and Texas Wesleyan doubles teams stood several newcomers to college table tennis, each hoping to pull the upset. No. 3 seed Chunyi Wang and Jingwen Hui from the University of Texas-Austin found themselves in the Hazinski/Perhoc half of the draw.

“We’re newbies to the NCTTA world and the College Table Tennis Championships,” noted Texas coach, Tuan Tran. “We have several new players this year, and we feel like we are much stronger than before. We have high expectations for this year,” says Coach Tran. Veteran player Chunyi Wang has been training three new players to prepare for the tournament.

Or as one passing player put it, “The chicks from UT are ballers they are ready to bring it.” Bring it they did as Hui and Wang made it to the women’s doubles semifinals before ultimately succumbing to Hazinski and Perhoc 3-1.

The 2011 College Table Tennis Championships ran from Friday April 15th and through Sunday April 17th at the Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minneosta.

Organized by the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA), the Championships are sponsored by Killerspin, a Chicago-based table tennis firm and Newgy Industries (Gallatin, TN). The event is also supported by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and by USA Table Tennis, the national governing body for table tennis in the US.
