Plano Set to Welcome College Table Tennis Championships

Preparations Underway for NCTTA’s Big Event in April

The eyes of Texas are upon the best collegiate table tennis players in North America.

Action in the NCTTA’s big dance – the college table tennis national championships - is set for April 13-15 in Plano, and fans of the game in the Lone Star State are tossing out the welcome mat.

A north Dallas suburb, Plano is the hotbed for the most active table tennis fans in North Texas.

We’re not sure if Texas Gov. Rick Perry will stop by to check on the action, but we know that droves of people will visit and others will volunteer to make this three-day table tennis extravaganza an awesome event.

Plano Table Tennis Club President Jon Liu is anxious for the April games to begin. Teams like No. 1 Texas Wesleyan, No. 2 Lindenwood and No. 3 Mississippi College have already booked appearances at the 2012 championships. Teams like Texas, Governors State, and Princeton will be there, too. Top-notch singles players are coming as well.

“Not only top college players but also future Olympians will demonstrate this eye-opening competition right in front of us,” says Plano Tennis Club President Jon Liu. “This will be a historic moment for Plano to host a national level sporting event.”

There’s no doubt that the fast-moving Olympic sport is catching on across the USA and Canada. Fans can see fancy spins, slams that rock at 70-mile per-hour speed, and behind-the scenes strategy sessions that make table tennis a thrilling game to watch. At the moment, about 150 colleges and universities in North America field NCTTA teams.

NCTTA President Willy Leparulo is also excited about raising his organization’s banner in Plano for three days in April. Plano is doing its part to make the games a success.

“We have heard so many great things about Plano and its sport and volunteer community,” says Leparulo, a Florida State University staff member in Tallahassee, and a longtime leader of the sport in North America. “NCTTA looks forward to bringing our talented athletes to the Lone Star State in April 2012!”

The national championships are always a place where opportunities are unlimited for armies of volunteers to step forward. Volunteers are needed for umpiring/officiating, registration, transportation, hospitality, registration, media coverage and much more. Those that pitch in will receive neat tournament t-shirts, banquet admission and a big thank you from the NCTTA family! Hugs are optional.

The tournament leaders are also on the lookout for additional sponsors. Those sponsors that sign up will be helping a big-time event and gain national exposure via web-streaming video and a high-traffic website www.nctta.org.

Time is running out before the Big Dance at the Plano Sports Authority’s PSA2. Admission prices are family-friendly, and we welcome spectators to the 2012 collegiate table tennis championships.
